Events & Observances
Declaration Day
July 2nd does hold significance in American history as the date
when the Second Continental Congress voted in favor of independence from Great
Britain. This resolution led to the drafting and adoption of the Declaration of
Independence, which was formally approved on July 4, 1776.
On July 2, 1776, the Continental Congress passed a resolution
declaring the thirteen American colonies as independent states, free from
British rule. The resolution, known as the Lee Resolution, was proposed by
Richard Henry Lee of Virginia and was a crucial step toward the formal
Declaration of Independence.
The Declaration of Independence, which was primarily authored by
Thomas Jefferson, was then debated, and revised by the Continental Congress
before its final adoption on July 4th. This date is now celebrated as
Independence Day in the United States, marking the country's declaration of
independence and the birth of the nation.
